Problem

Dams are critical infrastructures for water resource management. Regular maintenance and constant monitoring of these structures are essential to ensure hydraulic safety and prevent potential environmental and structural damage. NHAZCA has developed an advanced monitoring plan to assess the condition of these infrastructures and detect any anomalies or structural movements. The surrounding area is also regularly analyzed for effective geomorphological risk assessment, enabling the early identification of potential issues and facilitating the implementation of mitigation strategies.

The surrounding area is also regularly analyzed for effective geomorphological risk assessment, enabling the early identification of potential issues and facilitating the implementation of mitigation strategies.

Solution

NHAZCA employs a combination of cutting-edge technologies: satellite radar interferometry (InSAR) to monitor ground and structural movements with millimeter precision, post-processing of interferometric data to produce more interpretable outputs than raw data, and 3D modeling and GIS analysis to map the surrounding area and identify environmental risks.

In a preliminary phase, NHAZCA conducted studies to assess the existing structural conditions of the dams. High-resolution archive satellite images covering the study period were then acquired. NHAZCA experts analyzed the data, focusing on risk indicators such as abnormal deformations or subsidence. The data were integrated into a GIS system to visualize and compare information, providing recommendations for maintenance and risk mitigation.

Continuous monitoring has allowed the identification of certain at-risk areas, enabling the implementation of preventive interventions and reducing long-term maintenance costs. Advanced monitoring using remote sensing technologies is essential for the safety and sustainability of water infrastructure.
